Key Takeaways
  • Sri Lanka's humidity and temperature swings pose unique challenges for piano owners.
  • This guide gives you the practical advice you need to protect your instrument.

Understanding the Enemy: Humidity

The single greatest threat to a piano in Sri Lanka is not heat — it is humidity fluctuation. The soundboard, pin block, and action components are all made primarily of wood, which swells as humidity rises and contracts as it falls. This movement affects tuning stability, action precision, and over the long term, the structural integrity of the instrument itself. Sri Lanka's climate, with its monsoon seasons and significant regional variation, creates conditions that require informed management.

The Target Range

Piano manufacturers and conservators recommend maintaining relative humidity between 45% and 70% in the room where a piano is kept. Below 40%, the soundboard can crack. Above 80%, mould can develop on felt components, and wooden parts swell to the point where regulation is compromised. A simple hygrometer (available inexpensively) will tell you the current humidity level in your piano room.

Practical Measures for Sri Lankan Homes

Air conditioning is your most effective tool. A climate-controlled room maintained at 22–25°C with moderate humidity will significantly extend the life and tuning stability of your piano. If you do not have air conditioning, avoid placing the piano near exterior walls, windows, or areas with direct airflow from fans. Never place a piano in direct sunlight, which causes finish deterioration and dramatic local temperature changes. In very humid areas (the wet zone, coastal locations), a Dampp-Chaser system fitted inside the piano can regulate internal humidity actively.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Dust the piano regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Never use spray polish directly on the instrument — apply it to the cloth first. The keys should be cleaned with a barely damp cloth; never allow moisture to penetrate between the keys. Keep the fallboard (the key cover) closed when the piano is not in use, to protect the keys from dust and insects.

The Role of Regular Tuning

In Sri Lanka's climate, we recommend three tunings per year as a minimum for most household pianos. Regular tuning not only keeps the instrument sounding its best — it also provides an opportunity for a qualified technician to inspect the action, identify developing issues, and advise on preventive care before small problems become expensive ones.
