Piano Tuning

A piano has over 220 strings, each held at a precise tension to produce its correct pitch. Over time — through changes in temperature, humidity, and regular play — these tensions drift. What was once a perfectly voiced instrument begins to sound flat, harsh, or simply wrong.

Piano tuning is the process of adjusting each string back to its correct pitch using a professional tuning lever and a trained ear. It is part science, part artistry, and entirely essential. A piano that is played out of tune trains the ear incorrectly — a damage that is far harder to reverse than a missed tuning.

Most instruments in Sri Lanka's climate require tuning twice per year at minimum. Pianos in performance environments, or those played daily by advancing students, benefit from tuning every three to four months.

Our Tuning Process

01

Assessment

We begin by playing through the full range of the keyboard, listening for pitch discrepancies, identifying strings that need pitch raises, and checking the overall condition of the action.

02

Tuning

Using precision electronic tuning devices combined with our technician's trained ear, every string is brought to concert pitch. Severely flat pianos receive a pitch-raise treatment before fine tuning.

03

Certification

Once complete, we play test the piano across its full range and provide a written service record noting the condition found, work completed, and recommended next service date.

What to Expect, Step by Step

1

Consultation

We discuss your piano's history, how often it's played, and any specific concerns before scheduling your visit.

2

Inspection

On arrival, the technician inspects the action, pinblock, and strings to assess the instrument's overall condition.

3

Service Execution

Every string is brought to concert pitch using precision tools and a trained ear, with pitch-raises applied where needed.

4

Quality Check

We play test the full range of the keyboard to confirm even tone, correct pitch, and a stable, responsive action.

5

Completion

You receive a written service record with the condition found, work completed, and our recommended next service date.

Why Regular Tuning Matters

Protects Your Investment

A consistently tuned piano holds its tension and value far better than one left to drift for years between services.

Trains the Ear Correctly

Students and performers who play an in-tune instrument develop accurate pitch recognition from the start.

Even Tone Across the Keyboard

Proper tuning restores balance between registers, so no section of the keyboard sounds harsh or muted.

Early Problem Detection

Routine visits let our technician catch developing issues — loose pins, worn felts — before they become costly repairs.

Tuning FAQ

In Sri Lanka's tropical climate, we recommend tuning at least twice per year — typically at the start of the north-east and south-west monsoon seasons, when temperature and humidity changes are most pronounced. Pianos played daily by serious students, or used in performance environments, benefit from tuning every three to four months. New pianos should be tuned four times in their first year as the strings settle.
Our tuning service is priced based on the condition and location of the instrument. A standard tuning for a well-maintained piano in the Colombo area starts from a fixed rate. Pianos that have not been tuned for several years may require a pitch-raise treatment before fine tuning, which is priced separately. We provide a full quote before any work begins — there are no hidden charges.
Yes. We offer in-home tuning visits across Colombo and the Western Province. Home visits are available on scheduled service days. For locations outside the Western Province, please contact us — we do travel island-wide for restoration work and special engagements.
