Master Ranjan Fernando – Four Decades of Piano Work in Sri Lanka
- Founder of Ranjan Fernando Piano Centre in 1986, with more than 40 years of hands-on piano experience and the fourth generation of the Rodrigo–Fernando family's musical heritage.
Carrying a Family Tradition Forward
The Rodrigo–Fernando family's musical heritage spans four generations: Professor William Rodrigo, Professor Norbert Rodrigo, Professor Gerard Rodrigo and Master Ranjan Fernando. Master Ranjan Fernando founded Ranjan Fernando Piano Centre in 1986 and has more than 40 years of personal piano experience.
Learned at the Workbench
His expertise is practical, built through decades of hands-on workshop experience in piano tuning, repair and restoration rather than formal certification — and he has passed that knowledge on to the team at the centre. Master Ranjan personally carries out piano tuning and other work within his expertise; the team he has trained performs many of the centre's services.
A Sri Lankan-Built Piano
Together with his brothers and team, Master Ranjan Fernando built a piano in Sri Lanka for the local commercial market. It was featured in Divaina on 20 April 2004. Economic circumstances prevented regular production, and the piano was never sold — the family has kept it as a memento. Read the story of the Sri Lankan-built piano.
Musician and Teacher
Alongside his technical work, Master Ranjan Fernando is a pianist, guitarist and band leader, and he personally teaches piano to beginners, children and adults.
The Centre Today
Through Ranjan Fernando Piano Centre, Master Ranjan and the team he has trained provide piano sales, tuning, repairs, restoration and delivery for families, musicians and institutions in Colombo and throughout Sri Lanka — more than 5,000 pianos serviced and more than 5,000 families served since 1986.
