Piano Prices in Sri Lanka: What a Used Upright Piano Really Costs
- What decides the price of a second-hand upright piano in Sri Lanka, what else to budget for — delivery, tuning and any repairs — and how to tell a fair price from a false economy.
"How much does a piano cost in Sri Lanka?" is one of the questions we hear most often. The honest answer is that it depends on the instrument — but the factors that decide the price are predictable, and so are the extra costs that come with buying. This guide sets them out so you can budget with confidence.

What Decides the Price of a Used Upright
- Maker and model: Japanese Yamaha and Kawai uprights hold their value well because they are reliable and easy to service. Taller models such as the Yamaha U3 usually cost more than smaller family uprights such as the U1. Our guide to choosing between Yamaha and Kawai explains the model names.
- Age and condition: condition matters more than age. A carefully maintained older piano can be worth more than a younger one with worn hammers, rusty strings or loose tuning pins.
- Work already done: regulation, new hammers or felts, or restringing all add value — ask what has been done and when.
- Cabinet and finish: a clean, undamaged cabinet adds to the price, though it says nothing about what is inside.
The Costs People Forget
Delivery
A piano is heavy and easily damaged, and stairs or tight access add time and people. Budget for professional transport — within Colombo it starts from LKR 30,000. Read what happens on delivery day, or see our piano moving and delivery service.
Tuning after the move
A piano usually moves out of tune after it is transported and settles into a new room. Your delivery quotation confirms the recommended timing and whether follow-up tuning is included; after that, plan for regular tuning — LKR 5,000 overall, including pitch raising if needed. Our guide to how often a piano should be tuned explains the schedule.
Repairs
If a piano is cheap because it needs work, find out what that work will cost before you buy. Sticking keys and a broken string are usually modest repairs; a cracked soundboard or loose pinblock may mean restoration, which is a much bigger job. See how much piano restoration costs.
When a Cheap Piano Isn't
A very low price is often a sign that the piano needs more spent on it than it will ever be worth. Warning signs include tuning pins that turn too easily, many rusty strings, a cracked soundboard, insect or termite damage and keys that stick across the keyboard. If you are unsure, an independent assessment costs far less than a mistake — book a piano valuation or a buying consultation.
Not Ready to Buy?
If you are not sure a piano will be played — for example when a child is just starting lessons — renting a piano first is a practical way to find out before spending more.
